IOP Journal #1

So far I have already chosen a book (Brave New World) and a topic for my IOP:
  • I am going to show how Huxley shows that individualism is important in society through his dystopia of Brave New World. I will find examples of characterization in Bernard and the Savage to show this importance. I will also find more examples of the importance through the symbolism of government that he includes. This topic is important to our reality because other wise we are no one and nothing matters. Ultimately the lack of individualism would lead this dystopia of the Brave New World.
Now that I have a few specifics down I need to figure out what exactly I am going to be doing with this and how I am going to present it. I have been throwing some ideas around such as presenting a lecture or maybe doing mix of lecture and role playing. Lecturing seems like the most logical presentation format to me because most all teachers use it and it is what I am used to, but at the same time lecturing can get pretty boring and mundane. That is why I was thinking of presenting the lecture and then doing a role play of sorts.

Since I only have 10-15 minutes to present I was thinking that adding in a whole role play would not work because there is a time limit. Then I was thinking if I just integrate the role play into the lecture. That is the idea that has stuck so far for me. I will just have to figure out what kind of role play I want to do.

I will probably explain to the class what they would all be like if there was no individualism. That way they would have some background as to what was going on in the book. Then I will explain what the school would be like and the town and then work outward until I get to the government. This will help show the contrast between reality and BNW. This type of role play will get the class to feel the difference and put them into the mood of the book. It will also help with my presentation because the class will be able to understand better of what is taking place in the book and hopefully will make it more interesting if not entertaining.

Those are all the ideas I have for now! Hopefully I will be able to ponder up some more good stuff soon...
