Thought Provoking Question #1

How does the Chorus provide a sense of dramatic irony to the drama?

  1. The Chorus provides a sense of dramatic irony to the drama because they do hint at what is about to come next. They also interact with the characters to further the plot. For example, on page 224 they ask, "Oedipus--son, dear child, who bore you?" By saying this they are hinting at the prophecy. Oedipus did not make the connection that he was adopted yet the audience has.

  2. The Chorus also mentiones the idea of "fate" or "destiney" several times. Hinting at the fact that Oedipus cannot excape the prophecy. This is seen on page 209, "Destiny guide me always, Destiny find me filled with reverence pure in word and deed."
